The List

You know this "The ONE" list every girl/guy is supposed to make before choosing a partner?

Don't make one.

Or better yet - make one, and then enjoy the excitement of finding someone who doesn't match the stupid list.

Trust me - finding someone who doesn't meet everything you think you are looking for in a mate is WAY more fun than check marks and ticking off boxes on a list.

Tag Team Dinner

While we don't consider ourselves vegetarian, Chris and I eat a lot of meatless dinners.  Tonight was no exception, and it was extra delicious because we each made a different section, a little "marriage dinner tag team" event, if you will.

I've never made cornbread before, but saw a recipe to make it in Cosmo (I know, cornbread isn't what you think of when you think Cosmo...).  Chris wanted to make his Veggie Chili (a fairly regular appearance in the Course house), so I thought it made sense to put 'em together.

Cornbread is delicious! Especially right out of the oven... mmmm. (I added jalapeno, shredded cheese and kernel corn, as per Cosmo's "hot & spicy" instructions)

And I was sure to follow the directions on the packaging closely...

Cute.

Chris' Delicious Veggi Chili (complete with tofu & beer! in the chili!! WILD!)

Delish dinner.

And I learned Chris & I make a rather good dinner making team.  I'm thinking some kind of "Cooking With the Courses" Food Network show any day now...

Marriage Fail

I went to a friend's wedding on the weekend, and was reminded again, how wonderful and beautiful marriage can be, and how a wedding is a time for celebrating love and the unity of two people.

It is also a time to remember how serious the commitment is that you are making - to commit to spending the rest of your life with someone else is a BIG deal. Bigger than big.

I made that commitment three and a half years ago, and haven't looked back once.

This morning however - "marriage" made me exceptionally angry.

Kim Kardashian got married seventy two days ago.

Today, she filed for divorce.

I am extremely sick and tired of celebrities mocking marriage.  Stop getting married. Stop spending millions of dollars on a wedding.  Stop throwing your "love" in everyone's face, only to have the embarrassment of ending it less than three months later.

Why celebrities (or anyone who gets divorced over a short period of time) get married is mind boggling to me.  We live in a time where marriage is no longer necessary, no longer law, no longer an absolute means to an end.  It's something I believe in strongly, but you don't have to get married anymore.  So why do it?

I really think people don't realize that after the glitz of a wedding production (which for Kim Kardashian, it absolutely was. A 2 hour long, 10 million dollar spectacle on E!, actually), there is an actual marriage required.

After the white dress comes off, the DJ's been paid, and the presents have been opened, you really have to spend your life with someone. Shocking, I know.

Jelly Belly Bo Belly

Marriage is such an awesome thing when done with the right person.

I am most definitely doing marriage with the right person.
Reminded, once again, today.

Chris makes a chicken casserole dish that is more like Thanksgiving dinner all rolled in to the most delicious concoction.  On top of the casserole, we put cranberry sauce.
Since we don't have the time to make our own (I've heard it's easy and doesn't take that much time at all, but anyway) we buy it in a can.

I don't know about you, but something about this:
gives me the heebie geebies.

I've been grossed out by this texture for years. I can't hide my facial disgust when I see it.

I've also thought for the last year or so that we had magically found canned cranberry sauce that looked like this, even when it is still in the can:

Turns out my husband has been secretly opening the cranberry sauce can, and pre stirring it for me before I see it so that I don't get grossed out.

Today I found out, and I think I fell in love with him all over again.

Carts

In honour of our dog's third year as part of the family, I thought it might be nice to do a little "Dog Tribute" if you will.

I found Carter on Kijiji about a minute after asking my husband (then fiance) if it was okay if we got a dog.  Before he got to the "s" noise of his "yes" I was already clicking an ad for a Border Collie/Lab mix in need of a good home at the Fort Erie Humane Society.

The next day I made the trek with my mom, and upon seeing Kujo (Carter's unfortunate name before we got him), I fell in love.  He was the most pathetic, sad, and heart breaking dog I had ever seen at the pound.  It took 4 people to literally haul him out of his little cell and into the sunlight so I could get get to know him a bit better.

He had 13 ticks on him.  Most of them were around his eyes.  He had matted hair, was sad and slightly cross-eyed, and wouldn't play with me.  I wanted to take him home immediately.

Usually, the humane society did background checks on potential owners, but the woman said she had never seen a dog so depressed and told me if I could take him home that day, she'd make an exception.  I gave the woman my $81 dollars and Kujo was officially ours.

About an hour later, I wondered what the hell I had gotten myself into.
Kujo would not get into my car.  It took 3 burly men, a dog muzzle, and one hour to get him into my back seat. About half way home, he pooped in my car. Once I got him home, he cowered in the corner for most of the afternoon, looking as though as I was about to take out his eyeballs with a spoon.

When Chris came home that day, he was weirded out by Kujo's demeanor, and didn't know what to think.

So we changed his name.  Thinking it was important to keep the hard "C" sound, Carter was settled upon as the new name for our new dog.

Slowly, Carter came out of his shell.  We gave him a bath, plucked all his ticks, took him to the vet, got him groomed, and in a week, Kujo was already a distant memory.

The dog I remember getting on May 28, 2008 from the Fort Erie pound is not the dog we have today.  He was around for our wedding day, he's been in the house we live in for as long as we have, he's been with us every Christmas, Thanksgiving, and birthday since Chris and I became a family.  He's a fixture at every party we have.

Carter was diagnosed with cancer last April.  The Vet told us he wouldn't last past last summer.  And he's still here! And he's doing awesome!

Carter is the best.  If you've ever owned a dog, you know why.

It's Love.

My Husband Loves Me

Yesterday, I was watching the Food Network (SHOCKER!) and Bobby Flay was making "Stuffed French Toast"

Doesn't that look unbelievably good?
I mentioned a couple of times during the show how much I wanted to try it.

I woke up this morning, and this is what Chris had made me for breakfast:

Who needs Bobby Flay?

I have the best husband in the whole world.

Food Hearts

I have a husband who cooks. Jackpot? Yes.

This past Valentine's Day, he cooked one of my favourite dinners, and added a little "aww factor" to the dish with a heart shaped treat.
Did I notice it at first? Not a chance. I look at things too quickly, have little to no patience, and don't often take time to "smell the roses" (the world needs a new phrase - I will impatiently wait for one to come).

He knows this, and instead of getting upset, he just laughed and told me to look at the pasta more closely.  Appropriate swooning followed.
